Flap surgery (pocket reduction surgery) is a periodontal procedure where gum tissue is lifted back to allow deep cleaning of tooth roots and bone, then repositioned to reduce pocket depth and promote healing of advanced gum disease.
When non-surgical treatments are not sufficient to control advanced gum disease, flap surgery may be recommended. At BK Dental in Toronto, we perform periodontal flap procedures to access and treat deep infections and restore gum health.
Book a ConsultationFlap surgery, also known as pocket reduction surgery or osseous surgery, is a periodontal procedure where the gum tissue is gently separated from the teeth and lifted back like a flap. This provides direct access to the tooth roots and underlying bone, allowing thorough removal of tartar, bacteria, and infected tissue from deep pockets. After cleaning, the bone may be reshaped if necessary, and the gum tissue is repositioned and sutured in place to reduce pocket depth and promote healing.

Local anesthesia is administered to ensure complete comfort during the surgical procedure.
The gum tissue is carefully incised and lifted away from the teeth to expose the root surfaces and underlying bone.
All tartar, bacteria, and diseased tissue are meticulously removed from the roots and bone surface using specialized instruments.
If needed, irregular bone contours are smoothed to eliminate areas where bacteria can collect.
The gum tissue is repositioned at a level that reduces pocket depth and is secured with sutures.
Following your recovery instructions carefully will help ensure optimal healing. Contact us immediately if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, fever, or signs of infection.
The cost of periodontal flap surgery depends on the number of teeth and extent of bone involvement. It is typically higher than non-surgical treatment but may be necessary to save teeth. Factors affecting cost include: number of teeth requiring surgery, extent of bone loss and pocket depth, need for bone grafting or regenerative materials, complexity of the surgical case, and number of follow-up visits required. Many dental insurance plans provide partial coverage for periodontal surgery. We accept CDCP-eligible patients and offer payment options to make treatment accessible.
