Alveoloplasty
Alveoloplasty is an oral surgery procedure that reshapes and smooths the alveolar ridge (the bone that supports the teeth) after tooth extraction to create a better foundation for dentures, implants, or other dental prosthetics.
Alveoloplasty creates a smooth, even surface on the jawbone, which is essential for comfortable, well-fitting dentures. At BK Dental, we perform this procedure to prepare patients for successful prosthetic restoration after tooth extraction.
Book a ConsultationWhat Is Alveoloplasty?
Alveoloplasty is the surgical recontouring of the alveolar ridge, the bony ridge in the jaw that contains the tooth sockets. After teeth are extracted, the remaining bone may be uneven, sharp, or have bony projections that make it difficult to fit dentures comfortably. Alveoloplasty smooths these irregularities, creating an ideal surface for dentures or preparing the ridge for dental implants. The procedure may be performed at the time of extraction or as a separate procedure later.
Key Benefits
- Creates smooth foundation for comfortable dentures
- Improves fit and stability of dental prosthetics
- Eliminates sharp bone edges causing discomfort
- Prepares the ridge for successful implant placement
- Can be combined with extraction for efficiency
- Reduces need for future denture adjustments

How Alveoloplasty Is Performed
Evaluation
Examination and X-rays to assess the shape of the alveolar ridge and plan the recontouring needed.
Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area completely for a pain-free procedure.
Bone Recontouring
The gum is reflected, and bone is carefully smoothed and reshaped using specialized instruments.
Closure
The gum tissue is repositioned over the smoothed bone and sutured into place.
Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery from alveoloplasty is similar to recovery from tooth extraction. Swelling and discomfort are common for the first few days and gradually improve. If dentures are to be placed, there may be a healing period before final dentures are made to allow the tissues to stabilize. Immediate dentures can sometimes be placed at the time of surgery.
Aftercare Tips
- Take prescribed pain medication and antibiotics as directed
- Apply ice packs to reduce swelling for the first 48 hours
- Eat soft foods and avoid chewing directly on the surgical site
- Do not smoke, as this significantly delays healing
- Rinse gently with salt water after 24 hours
- Keep follow-up appointments for suture removal and healing checks
- If you have immediate dentures, follow instructions for wearing and care
- Allow adequate healing time before final dentures are made
Cost of Alveoloplasty in Toronto
The cost of alveoloplasty depends on the extent of bone recontouring needed and whether it is performed as a standalone procedure or combined with extractions. When done as part of preparation for dentures, it may be included in the overall treatment plan cost. We provide detailed estimates during your consultation.
