Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is a surgical procedure to extract one or more third molars, typically performed when these teeth are impacted, partially erupted, or causing pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth.

Wisdom teeth often cause problems due to lack of space in the jaw. At BK Dental, our experienced team performs safe, comfortable wisdom teeth extractions using modern techniques and sedation options to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.

What Is Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last teeth to develop, typically appearing between ages 17-25. When there is insufficient space in the jaw for these teeth to emerge properly, they become impacted. Wisdom teeth removal involves surgically extracting these teeth to prevent pain, infection, cysts, damage to neighboring teeth, and other complications. The procedure is one of the most common oral surgeries performed in dentistry.

Key Benefits

  • Eliminates pain and recurring infections
  • Prevents damage to adjacent second molars
  • Reduces risk of cysts and jaw tumors
  • Prevents crowding and teeth shifting
  • Makes oral hygiene easier
  • Prevents future complications that may be harder to treat

How Wisdom Teeth Removal Is Performed

1

Consultation

Digital X-rays or 3D imaging to evaluate the position of your wisdom teeth and plan the safest extraction approach.

2

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia to numb the area completely. Sedation options are available for anxious patients or complex cases.

3

Extraction

An incision is made in the gum if needed, bone may be removed to access the tooth, and the wisdom tooth is carefully extracted.

4

Closure

The site is cleaned, stitches are placed if necessary, and gauze is applied to control bleeding.

Recovery and Aftercare

Initial recovery: 3-4 days | Complete healing: 1-2 weeks

Most patients experience swelling and discomfort for the first 3-4 days, with swelling peaking around 48-72 hours after surgery. Pain is typically well-controlled with prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Most patients return to work or school within 2-3 days, though full healing of the extraction sites takes 1-2 weeks.

Aftercare Tips

  • Rest for the first 24 hours and avoid strenuous activity for several days
  • Apply ice packs to the outside of your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
  • Bite on gauze for 30-45 minutes to control bleeding
  • Eat soft, cool foods for the first few days (yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes)
  • Do not use straws, spit forcefully, or smoke for at least 72 hours
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after 24 hours
  • Take all prescribed medications as directed
  • Contact us immediately if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or fever
